Tuesday Bible Study
Our study for Advent will look at the passages in the Hebrew Scriptures that connect to the Christmas story. This week will look at the prophecy of Immanuel from Isaiah 7:10–17. What does this passage mean in its original context? How does the Gospel of Matthew use it to connect to the story of Jesus? The study meets in the Fireside Room at noon on Tuesday or on zoom. Rev. Baugh leads the class, which is open to all; please wear a mask if you attend in person.
The World's Most Dangerous Bible Study offers a parallel approach of a scripture and a song, TV program, etc. that deepens our understanding of the Bible and also helps us find God in unexpected places.
We will be looking at unusual Christmas songs for Advent, beginning with Simon and Garfunkel's "Silent Night/6 o'clock News.” The song powerfully asks how you can hear the good news of Christmas in the world or bad news seems so dominant. We will also be looking at the “Little Apocalypse” in Mark 13:5–27. It's it's a strange and disturbing scripture that comes up in the lectionary every year around this time. We will discuss how to reconcile that with the joy of the season. The study meets on zoom at 7:00 pm. Rev. Baugh leads the class, which is open to all.
